New to Golf? Here’s How to Set Goals for Yourself

If you’re just starting out with the game of golf, you may be feeling overwhelmed with how much you have to learn and improve upon. The best way to ensure that you are meeting your own expectations is to set goals for yourself – and achieve them! Maybe you are looking to improve your golf swing, or maybe you are trying to pick up your club head speed. If you have never set goals for yourself, here are a few tips on how to get started.

Make sure your goals are specific. When you are creating your goals, it is important to make sure that they are specific and detailed enough for you to truly understand what you are aiming towards. For example, if you are trying to pick up your club head speed, make it more specific by including exactly how many miles per hour you are looking to achieve.

Make sure your goals are realistic. Ensure that the goals that you are setting for yourself are realistic and attainable. While it is great to set goals that encourage you to better yourself, you also have to make sure that, over time, these goals can be met.

Know why you want to achieve your goal. Why are you setting these goals for yourself? Are you trying to pick up golf as a new favorite sport? Or, maybe you are trying to improve your game after a few years of experience? By knowing what your motivation is behind each of your goals, you will feel more passionate about attaining them.

Have a timeline as well as deadlines. Once you have your goals, create a timeline that has specific deadlines that will allow you to work towards meeting your goal. Look at each day of the week and small things that you can do each day. Having a timeline will serve as a way to stay on top of each “stepping stone” towards success!

Don’t be afraid to ask for advice. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask friends, family or colleagues for advice on how to best achieve your goals. You may know someone who is a pro on the course, who may be able to share similar goals that they have had in the past, and therefore, will be able to share how to best achieve them.
